Our musts for holiday DIYs: realistic ✓, reusable and/or compostable ✓, beautiful ✓. Let’s get into it!

Sustainable holiday gift wrap ideas featuring beeswax wrap, cloth bags, a toque, recycled packaging, etc.

1. Beeswax wrap

Beeswax is a sustainable home powerhouse. Not only can it make your life easier in your kitchen or lunchbox, it can also step up as a clever holiday helper. Use a beeswax wrap — like this one from Nature Bee (a local company here in Victoria, BC and get 10% off with code THEPURPOSEFULYOU) — to cover gifts without tape, OR make a pouch for festive snacks:

  1. Fold your beeswax wrap in half.

  2. Seal the edges by folding the short sides in a few times.

  3. Put peppermint bark, shortbread, or any other holiday baking inside.

  4. Fold the top over to close.

2. Gifting a toque?

A toque is a wonderful gift this time of year, even for that hard-to-buy-for person! Use it to enclose small gifts like soap, skincare products, candles etc. Tie with twine and add a sprig of rosemary or another holiday garnish. Who knew?! We love our toque from Salt Shop- Click here.

3. Furoshiki wrap

If you don’t know, now you know — Furoshiki wraps make reusable gifting magic. Use it to cover a gift for the minimalist in your life, who will appreciate being able to pay it forward for someone in return! We love this one from The Market Bags, made with GOTS-certified organic cotton in Kelowna, BC. They come in many sizes and most of them are made with upcycled material.

5. Tea towels

If you know someone who loves to collect aesthetically-pleasing tea towels, this could be your new go-to! All you have to do is tie it up with something fun inside — no accessories needed. It’s also the perfect way to wrap a housewarming gift. You can find this one from Ten and Co in our 2023 Sustainable Holiday Gift Guide.

6. Organic gift sack or Reusable Tote

Santa’s workshop has gone sustainable! These bags are from Rather Green and they have many different bags to chose from! Entirely organic, dyed without the use of harmful chemicals, and ethically made in Canada. The plain, minimalist design makes them suitable for any time of the year.

With these in mind, we hope you feel equipped to elevate your eco gift wrapping this year — and whenever the opportunity presents itself (pun intended!). No matter what you do, your loved ones will feel the extra care you put in. We’re pretty sure anyone would love getting a practical bonus gift they can reuse.
