6 Ingredient Salsa Recipe

The key word here is 6 ingredients! Let’s not over complicate making salsa. If you’ve been following our blogs for a while, you’ll know that I love simple recipes. I love to eat in season and make meals with food from our garden.

Seasonal eating has been such a priority for our family. As the season changes from summer to fall, we are using up all our tomatoes we grew in the garden. We grew 16 tomato plants this year, mainly large tomatoes. Salsa was something new we tried this year and the freshness of this recipe will sure to please any crowd!

Grow the Ingredients in the Garden

We grew 5 out of the 6 ingredients in our garden. What didn’t we grow? Limes! We hope to have a greenhouse one day to grow these. Here’s a little information on what ingredients we grew to inspire you to grow them too:

Garlic: plant garlic in the fall (ideally before your first frost date) and wait 9 months to harvest. Garlic can easily be stored and enjoyed all winter long

Onion: plant onions in February, we like to buy starters and plant them in the ground at the end of February

Cilantro: We purchase organic starters in the spring and fall as they like cooler weather.

Jalapeno: Easy to grow in a hot climate or in your sunniest spot in the garden. Plant spring and enjoy at the end of the summer season. These can be grown in pots too!

Tomato: Purchase starters or start indoors early spring. Grow medium to large varieties for salsa making.

A Few Tips Before Making

As I mentioned, it’s an easy recipe, just chop and stir. Here’s a few things I wanted to mention before you get started though. If you like spice, add more of the jalapeno seeds. I would say this recipe is garlic heavy as that’s the way we like it! Lastly, you can play around with the amount of tomatoes based on your taste buds and how fresh your ingredients are.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of tomatoes (2 medium tomatoes)

  • 1/2 cup of onion (1 medium onion)

  • 2 garlic cloves (option to add 1 if you want it less strong)

  • 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro

  • 1/3 cup of chopped jalapenos (we used 2 and added a few seeds)

  • 1/2 squeezed lime

  • 2 tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Chop tomatoes, garlic, cilantro, jalapenos and onion. We like to do it quite finely

  2. Cut lime in half

  3. Add all chopped ingredients to a bowl and then squeeze the half a lime

  4. Add salt

  5. Serve on tortilla chips as an appetizer or add to tacos! We also like it on our eggs in the morning.
