Planet-Friendly Cleaning With Nellie’s

Did you know I wrote an e-book? It’s perfect for beginner gardeners in their first 3 years of gardening. Check it out and purchase my e-book here!

It was time to think differently about the products in my home — that was my light bulb moment when I was expecting my first child. As I was purchasing clothes, cleaning items and products for the nursery, I started to analyze everything I was bringing into the household. What sort of environment was I creating? Yes, my head was spinning a little at the beginning, with so many choices to make, but then I brought it down to basics. Ultimately, it was a mindset shift — I wanted to match my values with my purchases. I especially wanted to create a non-toxic, eco-friendly home when it came to our cleaning products.

No doubt, our actions are inspired by how we grew up and the influences around us. The homes we were raised in had specific scents, products and rhythms that we learned to follow. As we get older and start making our own choices, we only know what we’ve been taught. It’s up to us to think outside the box. One thing I’m sure about: cleaning is an area we can all improve on, with the potential for tangible changes to genuinely help the environment. Remember, one step at a time!

My first introduction to a more planet-friendly cleaning product was was Nellie’s Baby Laundry. Laundry is something a lot of us overlook, sustainability-wise. Detergent used on our clothes touches our skin all day long! When I thought about it that way, I started to use the Laundry Soda from Nellie’s for my husband and me, too, so that we were all using safer products.

It wasn’t long after our son was born that we realized we needed something to take out tough stains. Most products on the market are full of chemicals or have bleach in them. Nellie’s WOW Stick Stain Remover, which is free from dyes and synthetic fragrances, quickly became our best friend — especially since we went the cloth diaper route! Cleaning those bad boys needed some extra stain removal.

We often forget that what goes down the drain ends up in our waterways. As we embarked on our conscious living journey — which is why The Purposeful You began! — my husband and I slowly switched products in our home. Our goal was to make better choices for ourselves, for the planet and for the animals. We started using the dishwasher powder, wool dryer balls (as an all-natural alternative to toxic dryer sheets) and Oxygen Brightener from Nellie’s. The latter is a bestseller and uses the power of oxygen to penetrate stains and strip away dirt, odor and grime. It’s a safe alternative to bleach and keeps our colours bright and our whites white!

The last thing I’ll point out is that all of the products we use from Nellie’s are in the form of powder!  WHY? Liquid detergents are made up of mostly water. Transporting water is not ideal for our planet, and why should we use more water when we don’t need to? The fact is, more cleaning power can be packed into a smaller space using powder. Well done, Nellie’s! Visit their website here to see a full line of their products: https://www.nelliesclean.ca/

If you have any questions about the products mentioned above, let me know — I believe in transparency and so does Nellie’s! It’s time we make better choices in our homes for ourselves and for future generations. And of course, for the planet!
