Critters and Cookies Party
When it comes to birthday party themes for my kids, there are two things I think about. First, what is the nature element? Secondly, how can I decorate and displau with food for this theme? In the past, I have done bunnies and blooms and farmers market themed parties. These are all fun themes to decorate with food and flowers. This year’s theme for my daughters 3rd birthday was her two favourite things and it couldn’t have turned out more perfect — Critters and Cookies!
My daughter loves all living things and she is really into centipedes, worms and beetles. Bringing the critters theme into the decor and food was easier than I thought too! I purchased some critters to use for display that she could play with after the party and even at bath time. I grabbed a log we had on the property and added some gummy worms and critters to the log. I also took a branch off of our maple tree, added it to a vase with rocks and clips on ladybug bag clips (I needed more of these in the kitchen anyways!) The maple branch was such a statement on the table.
Another way to bring critters into the decor was with the food. I made ants on a log, added black dots to the wax on the cheese, caterpillar grape skewers and had cookies made with her favourite bugs on them.
The cookies I chose for the party were earthy toned macarons and sugar cookies that I had made by a local baker, and I also included gummy worms. The cake is always a big part of the sweets selection and display. My sister in law makes a cake for the kids every year and this one was so simple and cute with critters on them that acted as a gift as well! Simple and elegant.
Adding additional things like lady bug napkins, flowers from the garden and books were other ways I brought the theme into the table display. Books are the best as I usually have them on hand or again this doubles as a gift after the party. You can buy specific ones for your theme. You can never have enough books!
I hope you enjoyed the simple yet effective details of this party theme. I hope you try it out for yourself!
