Our Sustainably Made Mattress Reveal With Obasan

We finally did it. We upgraded to a King size bed! It’s been a long time coming. We finally have a room large enough to accommodate a king bed in our new home. If you’ve been thinking about it for a while, it is definitely worth the investment! Where do you start? There are many bed frame options to choose from but what mattress company do you go with? Since we spend one third of our lives in the bedroom (wow read that again), it is a decision we should not take lightly. We researched various options and our priorities were not only the materials and comfort but that it is long lasting and ethically made. We chose to purchase a king size mattress from Obasan. Let us tell you why we love our mattress and the experience we had with Obasan.

Sustainability

This was a main focus for us as we strive to live more intentionally in our home. Obasan is a Canadian company that produces the world’s finest organic mattresses. Their highly ethical practices and use of natural materials make them an excellent choice when creating a healthy bedroom. I was able to speak to a representative over zoom and tour the certified factory. It was wonderful to see the carbon neutral workshop in Ottawa, Canada and to witness the care and passion that goes into the production of each handcrafted item. This level of customer service and transparency is hard to find and much appreciated. Read on to find more sustainable aspects of the mattress itself.

Materials

The materials used to make an Obasan organic mattress distinguishes it from a conventional mattress. They use the world’s finest GOTS and GOLS certified organic cotton, rubber and wool. Organic cotton and wool are breathable & moisture-wicking materials, keeping your body temperature regulated throughout the night. The benefit of using natural fibers is that they don't generate heat like synthetic fibers. This was especially helpful postpartum as my body was running hot. The wool has the capacity to absorb 30% of its weight in moisture and repels it quickly. If you tend to sweat at night, this will help create a dryer sleep, resulting in a more restorative & deeper sleep. A mattress protector is always recommended, this will absorb any body oils or sweat keeping the mattress fresh. We also added a topper to our bed for extra comfort. Each mattress is handcrafted for you! There are no glues, no off-gassing and no flame retardants. When we opened the box there were no smells and we could use the mattress that night. That was such a good feeling!

Customization for comfort

Customizing a mattress was not on our radar at first. When you purchase a King size mattress, Obasan uses different cubes to create a tailored mattress on each side. This process is so unique and a huge reason we knew this was the best product for us. My husband is primarily a back sleeper and I am a side sleeper so we needed different support. Obasan creates soft, medium and firm cubes that you can organize for each side. You can put them in the order that works with your height, weight and body. It allows pressure relieving sleep that soothes the joints and cradles the spine depending on your sleep position. There is a bottom and top piece that you layer as well with a cover over the whole mattress that makes it feel flat and smooth. The sustainability aspect of the design is that if you need to adjust the comfort or rejuvenate the feeling of your bed, it can be easily done by repositioning /replacing some of the components (without the need of replacing the whole mattress). The mattress is also flippable! Since the mattress has layers and cubes, it’s easier to rotate and flip compared to other mattresses on the market. It is actually required to flip/rotate the cubes and top layer every 6-8 months to spread the wear on all corners of the bed. This will extend its lifespan. Knowing we can aid in the longevity of our mattress, makes us feel confident in our investment.
