My West Coast Cabin Kitchen Reveal
Where do I even begin? Having a beautiful cabin kitchen on a remote island feels like a dream come true—a little space waiting for me to bake, cook, gather and, of course, feed the people I love. This Pacific Northwest cabin is really a gathering place for friends and family, and food has a funny way of becoming part of the memories we make here. Whether we’re cooking a freshly caught Pacific Northwest salmon dinner, or flipping pancakes made with freshly picked island blackberries, the kitchen is where so many of those moments begin. Food is a memory, after all.
Having a kitchen where I can play, host and create dishes that nourish the people I love feels pretty special. When we designed the space, my goal was to create a highly functional cabin kitchen with as much storage as possible, clean lines and a timeless feel—but with a little personality sprinkled in, too. And I think we achieved it! It’s practical and made for everything from slow mornings to big dinners with friends gathered around the table.
This cabin means so much to our family as my grandparents own the cabin next door to us, so of course, I had to include a little something to honour my loved ones with this engraved wooden board (below) that features my grandmother’s scone recipe, written in her handwriting.
Dining Nook
Starting in the dining nook, we added an antique table that was left at the cabin when we purchased it. It adds a little more of a Scandinavian vibe to this space, and it’s a nod to the original cabin before we renovated! We paired it with these gorgeous Rosin Dining Chairs & the Armless Rosin Banquette from Article, and it created the ultimate cozy dining nook for morning coffee, family dinners and card playing.
Cabinetry & Hardware
The cabinets are from IKEA! All the cabinets cost under $5000 and it looks beautiful! We decided to do a two tone as the ceilings are vaulted, and the white on the top makes the space feel bigger. The oak finish (called VEDHAMN) looks like oak, and we get so many compliments on it—I highly recommend! We had one design consultation with IKEA, and they did the entire kitchen design in one hour with all the measurements, extra storage, pantry storage and we couldn’t be happier.
To bring a touch of brass to the space we added Emtek Hardware across the space in a couple of shapes to suit the upper and lower cabinets, plus it keeps the cabinets a little more visually interesting. We have their Cabinet Pulls, and Cabinet Knobs, both in the Satin Brass finish, which adds a touch of sophistication and brings in warmth to the space.
Counters & Backsplash
The quartz backsplash we ordered from a local supplier, and we ended up choosing one with lots of veins to bring interest to the kitchen, and the counter top is RH7002 from RH Stones. We decided to bring the counter top up as the backsplash, and I’m so happy we did as it brings an elegance to the space and makes it easy to clean. It has brown undertones which we felt brings that beachy feeling inside. We also took the backsplash all the way up to the range hood—if you ask me, it truly makes a statement! A last minute choice was the small shelve over the sink. It quickly became my favourite space to display timeless pieces from Farmhouse Pottery (check out that full blog here!).
Kitchen Sink
Bringing colour into the space with the sink was something I never thought of, but our interior designer Tiare Watson encouraged us to give it a shot, and I am thrilled with the result. The sink is from Blanco Sinks (which is our go to!), and is made from granite & composite material, which makes it really sturdy and a great quality! It also comes in a ton of colour options, and various sizes, layouts & depths depending on what you need for your space. The faucet is from Kohler in a bronze finish.
Lighting
Installing pot lights in the kitchen was a must for the dark winter months, but adding a touch of whimsy with this gorgeous light over the sink was always the plan, and I can confidently say that I am obsessed with the Heirloom Wall Scone from Light House Co. for this space! With its softly sculpted, shell-like form and aged brass finish, this sconce brings a beautiful coastal, heirloom feel to the space.
Appliances
For the appliances in the kitchen, we opted for a package of KitchenAid pieces from our local appliance store. We didn’t need anything super fancy, but wanted to make sure we had the right equipment in place to host & feed our families throughout the year. We installed a beautiful stove, as well as a dishwasher because who wants to be washing dishes all evening while your guests are relaxing? I know I don’t!
This kitchen is truly going to be the centre and heart of our cabin. We plan to host so many friends & family here now that our renovation is complete, and I cannot wait to see what the holiday season has in store for this space!
